Some people be hesitating about asking me about my story because they think I’ll get all sensitive, but I’m not that type. I actually don’t mind telling my story because I think it might inspire and encourage other people that are also going through a lot too. My story is kind of long and is also still going. So, sit back and relax, we’re going to be here for a while.
Hi, my name is Kayla Ikei Tyson and I already know what you’re going to ask, “What kind of middle name is that?!” My sister named me and I really don’t know what “Ikei” means, but my sister probably just thought it was cute or something. Anyway, when my mama found out she was pregnant with me, it was a big shock to her because she was 40 years old and she was for sure that she wasn’t having any more kids. She was at the doctor office because she thought she had the flu or something, but turned out it was me. When I was in my mama’s stomach, I really wasn’t moving like I was supposed to.
We were at family reunion when her water broke and everyone was freaking out, especially my daddy. We rushed to the hospital and that’s when everything went down. When I came out, I wasn’t doing anything, not crying nor moving. So, they airlifted me to CMC as quick as they could. On the way, they had to bring me back to life 3 times. When I got to CMC hospital, the doctors diagnosed me with Arthogryposis Multi Complex. In other words, there was a lot wrong with me. The doctor even said I wouldn’t live but 6 months. I can’t even imagine what my parents was thinking and feeling at that moment. I was 6lbs, 9oz. and I was very fatigue. Everyone was so scared to touch or hold me because they thought they would hurt me. Turns out, I lived longer than 6 months and I was my parents pride and joy.
My childhood was the best. I went to Jefferson Elementary and I was 3 years old in Pre-K. That’s also when I got my first electric wheelchair. At first, I was very scared when I saw it, but I got used to it and was a pro driving it. I remember my first crush, his name was Jonah and he was a white boy and I was in 2nd grade then. I also had amazing friends named Megan and Simon. All I remember is being spoiled all the time and going on a lot of vacations like the beach, Ohio, Virginia, and D.C. When I was a little girl, I loved to just go in my room and listen to my radio and sing along. Music and my family was the only thing that I worried and cared about back then.
Until one day, the worst day of my life. My parents and I was coming back from a normal night out or that was what I thought. When we got into the house, my parents were arguing. I was like 7 years old then, so I didn’t know what or why they were arguing. I kept saying “stop, stop, please stop!” Then the last thing I heard my mama say to daddy was "You want me to get out your house, Fine!" While my mama packed me and her clothes, I cried to my daddy so hard and told him to make us stay, but he couldn’t. So my mama gave me a choice to stay with my daddy or go with her. I chose to go with mama because I knew my daddy couldn't take care of me like mama could. So, my mama and I went to my grandma's house and I cried that whole night because I knew that everything was going to change and it did.
